Good news ...11:31 am
Some good news floating around today:
- Democrat Kucinich to Launch 2008 Bid.
- Arctic ice rapidly disappearing. In less than forty years it’ll all be gone. The good news is that you can still buy land real cheap in northern Canada. Get in on the ground floor of the new Riviera. They’ve got people who speak French up there and everything.
- Olmert’s getting into trouble for his nuclear slip. But, seriously, on the principle that clarity is usually best, wouldn’t it be a good thing to put Israel’s “nuclear ambiguity” to rest? As it is, everyone knows Israel has nuclear weapons, and everyone from Ahmadinejad to the Saudis to the usual suspects on the anti-Israeli left are free to knock the supposed hypocritical inconsistency of allowing them to have the bomb while sanctioning others for pursuing it. Israelis can’t respond, lest they give up their precious “ambiguity.” After his slip, Olmert made the point yesterday that Israel is a democracy which does not threaten its neighbors, as contrasted with Iran which is ruled by mullahs and openly wishes for the destruction of Israel — not to mention “Death to America.” No kidding. If any country ever had the proper moral case to make for possessing deterrent nuclear weapons, it is Israel. It might be thought that Olmert’s statement was therefore not a slip, but that would appear to be belied by his more recent backtracking.
- Bryan Ferry, Duran Duran and Elton John have been lined up to play at the Diana Memorial Concert, marking the 10th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death. This is good news, because we were in grave danger of forgetting all about her. No word yet on whether President Clinton will appear and play any tapes from his personal collection. Byron York has more analysis of that story here. And Powerline wonders why exactly Teddy Forstmann, a “prominent Republican” who was “national co-chairman of George H. W. Bush’s 1992 campaign” would have been a proper subject of surveillance.
