Claude Allen, Ann Coulter, etc. ...9:08 pm
Why do I like Ann Coulter? If there’s any one reason it is the fact that she is the only political columnist who can make me laugh out loud; loud enough to fall off my chair, even if at times involuntarily. Her last few columns have seemed to me to be kind of weak, but today she hits a home run, tackling the story of Claude Allen. Like just about everyone, including Ann, I never knew who Claude Allen was until this past week, when this former domestic policy advisor to President George W. Bush was alleged to have engaged in some kind of fraudulent-returned-goods scam at the “Target” department store. As Ann points out, he was yet another black American appointed to an influential position by Bushitler — not that anyone in the media noticed until he was alleged to have done something wrong.
I guess the only way we’ll ever find out how many blacks have worked in the Bush administration is to wait for them to get in trouble someday so we can read the breathless, triumphant stories on the front page of The New York Times about a black Republican scofflaw. It’s amazing that anyone has ever heard of Condoleezza Rice — she’s never even been arrested for jaywalking.
….
During the entire time this talented, intelligent, magnificently conservative black man held high positions in the Bush administration, he was mentioned in only 11 articles in The New York Times. (A small part of Times Executive Editor Bill Keller dies every time the paper is forced to mention any black top officials in the Bush administration. It might remind people that the most highly placed black in the Clinton administration was his secretary, Betty Currie.)But since Allen was accused of stealing from department stores a few weeks ago, the Times has mentioned him in seven articles — including a major front page article on Monday, coverage more appropriate to the first moon landing. This makes Allen the first black alleged thief whose photo has ever appeared in The New York Times.
Ann also goes over Allen’s bio, and his transformation into a born-again Christian and a Republican (also known as strike two and strike three in the liberal rulebook, as Ann points out). Taking her cue from an episode in Allen’s past where he drew the ire of gay activists, Coulter titles her piece:
Revenge of the Queers. Oh, boy.
But who can question her angle when you have headlines like this from the Windy City Times: Right Wing Homophobe Arrested for Theft.
From BET.com, another angle on Claude Allen.
Meanwhile, Michelle Malkin has picked up on the story of Claude Allen’s twin brother, Floyd. This whole story may end up being way stranger than fiction, and President Bush’s statement that he “felt sad for the Allen family” may be the wisest remark yet made.
